Earthing, also known as grounding, is a relatively new concept but one that is gaining popularity in the world of alternative healing. So what exactly is earthing and why is it good?

Earthing basically refers to the direct physical contact of the human body with the surface of the earth. It involves connecting with the earth by walking barefoot on the grass or sand outside. Ancient healers believed that the Earth’s energy could be easily absorbed through our skin and the soles of our feet.

When our bare feet make contact with the earth, there is a transfer of free electrons from the earth through the skin. So how exactly do these free electrons benefit the human body?

The human body is essentially made up of many different molecules with hundreds if not thousands of atoms joined together. Each atom in turn is comprised of a core, which is made up of protons and neutrons that carry a positive charge, as well as a group of electrons that carry a negative charge and which revolve around the core.

The human body undergoes numerous chemical reactions in order to sustain life and these reactions are collectively known as the process of metabolism. During these chemical reactions, molecules are constantly undergoing changes.

It is important for molecules to stay stable and this means that they must contain the right amount of electrons. If a molecule loses an electron which it isn’t supposed to, it can turn into what is called a free radical. Free radicals are unstable and they can react with other molecules like our DNA and damage them. These damaged molecules in turn can also become free radicals and cause even more damage to other molecules.

Antioxidants help with free radical damage by giving electrons to free radicals, which effectively neutralises them so that they cannot do any damage or harm. So antioxidants are effectively donors of electrons to free radicals and they keep free radicals in check, while also protecting cellular health. When these free radicals are not kept in check and there are more pro-oxidants to antioxidants, this can lead to a state called oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can lead to cell death and premature ageing, and has been linked to many diseases including cardiovascular disease and cancer.

We have all heard about antioxidants from food, but scientists claim that the free electrons from the earth are powerful antioxidants too and that we absorb these through our skin and the soles of our feet when we make direct contact with the earth. So in effect, earthing can help keep free radical damage and oxidative stress at bay.

Research has shown that earthing can improve blood pressure, reduce stress, lower cortisol (our stress hormone), relieve mild depression and improve sleep. It has been said that the earth’s energy upholds the energy of our bodies and serves as a foundation for vitality and health.

If you already walk around bare foot then earthing is not new to you, but if you haven’t tried it, then I recommend that earthing be included as part of a holistic approach to health.
