There comes a point in life when you decide enough is enough.

You’re done with whatever situation or drama that was weighing you down and you’ve finally made the decision to move on. The chapter is closed, the story has ended. It’s time to move on and start writing a new chapter in your life.

Or maybe you thought you’ve already moved on but you somehow find yourself falling back into the same patterns, stuck in the same rut, replaying the past over and over in your head.

Here’s a 3-step plan to effectively move on with your life:

  1. Let go

This is the first step and is about the hardest yet most important thing you will have to do.

Sometimes, you think you’ve let go, but you really haven’t. You keep replaying the events in your mind, allowing the past to keep haunting you. You toss and turn in bed at night, plagued by sleepless nights, and your soul feels unsettled because you are not completely at peace with the situation.

The thing about letting go is that it involves forgiveness: be it forgiving others or yourself.

In order to fully let go, you’ll need to forgive those who have hurt you deeply and those whom you’ve attributed as the cause of the situation.

You may also need to forgive yourself for whatever has happened. Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is a saint. How long will you beat yourself up for what has happened? Take it as a learning experience and grow better, stronger and wiser from it.

Coming to terms with things requires being at peace with the decisions you’ve made, and accepting the outcome of the situation. I know this can be really hard but if you don’t face the situation head on and process your feelings, you won’t be able to let go and it will become a chain that binds you to the past and holds you back in life.

It’s time to set yourself free.

  1. Make plans

Next, start making plans. List down all the things you’ve been wanting to do, as this will help propel you forward. What did you put on the backburner when you were stuck in that rut? Think about what you used to be passionate about. What does your heart desire?

These plans can be geared towards self-healing, health and fitness, passion, recreation, and personal growth and development. Start with simple things like getting healthy, exercising regularly, eating right and meditating to calm the mind. These will start creating positive ripples in your life in no time.

You could also consider things you never thought you would or could do. Book that exotic trip you’ve always wanted to take. Start a hobby that you’ve always been drawn to but just never did anything about. The possibilities are limitless if you just expand your mind.

Making concrete plans will help you feel more in control of your life so start now.

  1. Take action

All the planning in the world will simply remain ideas until you put them into action. This is where you stop thinking and start doing. Once you start moving, you’ll begin creating the change in your life that you’ve been wanting.

And your new chapter will write itself.
